A report evaluating[评估] Chinese cities' performance in sustainable development[2015年中国城市可持续发展报告] has been launched in Beijing. Published by the United Nations Development Programme[联合国开发计划署], the report evaluates 35 regional capital cities[省会城市] across China, and finds out among them, seven have been able to achieve high human development while also minimizing damage to the environment.

Cities outside of the more developed eastern parts of the country, will require more support in their transition to sustainability.

Chinese cities have been growing rapidly in recent years[近年来中国城市发展迅速]. More than half of China's population now live in cities. And by 2020, the figure will reach 60 percent. To achieve sustainable development in cities, future work lies mainly in four areas.
"We have to improve the quality of development[提高发展的质量] and reduce the consumption of natural resources[自然资源] and ecological environment[生态环境]. The city government should attract capital input[资本投入;资金投入] from multiple channels rather than simply relying on land-based fiscal mode[财政模式], decomposite its functions and get the entire society involved in urban development," Professor Zhu Dajian, director of Sustainable Dev't & New-type Urbanization Think Tank[可持续发展和新型城镇化智库], said.
