Myriad factors are in play, from financial security to environmental safety. A June 4, 2018 column in The New York Times explored the interplay of these various factors by looking at findings from the recently published “The State of US Health, 1990-2016” study in JAMA. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Howard Kohco-authored an editorial that accompanied the JAMA study in which he emphasized the importance of the Affordable Care Act as it pertains to counseling and screening interventions for everything from cancer to depression to hypertension. Koh, Harvey V. Fineberg Professor of the Practice of Public Health Leadership in the Department of Health Policy and Management, told the Times that these types of preventive services are key to giving everyone an opportunity to achieve their best state of health. “Dr. Murray’s study shows that too many people are not enjoying that opportunity,” Koh said. “It should be a call to action for the country.
