China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has urged more transparency in college student enrollment in its affiliated universities. Universities are ordered to release more information about enrollment policies, students' credentials, enrollment results, and complaint channels. Almost 10 million students sat this year's college entrance exam. Enrollment is currently under way, and the new term will begin in September. A scandal involving a corrupt admission official that was exposed this spring cast doubt on transparency and fairness in college admissions. Cai Rong-sheng, former head of admissions at Beijing's Renmin University of China, was arrested in May on charges of receiving huge bribes. He was accused of taking more than 10 million yuan, or around 1.6 million U.S. dollars, to "help" students during enrollment. The ministry banned universities from favoritism, fraud and unlawful charges, among other irregularities. It also vowed to severely punish those involved in malpractice. While Chinese students flock to study overseas nowadays, students from other countries are spending their summer vacations in Beijing to prepare for tests to enter colleges overseas. Ninety percent of the students who took SAT; that's Scholastic Assessment Test courses in Beijing in June were from overseas. Most of these students were high school graduates from the United States and are preparing to enter college there. Many of them were born and raised in China and went to the U.S. for middle school or high school to increase their chance of entering a U.S. university. In the prep classes in Beijing, students focus on getting better grades because training schools on the mainland have mastered the art of improving scores. Lower costs is another major factor attracting the students. New Oriental School, headquartered in Beijing, is one of the many training schools and the largest private education institution helping students to study abroad. Around 5,000 students took SAT exams in Beijing during their summer vacations last year and around 2,000 of them were from overseas. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. The risk refers to the leakage of personal information such as text messages, contact lists and photos by using Apple products. Their reasons to brush off the potential risk range from the ubiquitous imperfection of electronic gadgets to die-hard obsession. Users of China's most popular micro-blogging service website Sina Weibo say that even if the iPhone can extract people's data, it's still not a big deal. Others say they do not worry about it because they are not celebrities or politicians who need to prevent their private life from going public. China is the world's largest mobile phone market where the topic of how the long-awaited iPhone 6 looks like has remained one of the most discussed in the cyberspace. The smart appearance and the values a mobile phone is associated with seem prevail over its safety and security. Although no related opinion poll results are immediately available, comments on the news entry at Sina Weibo appear to be largely optimistic, with occasional criticism of Apple's immorality and the U.S. surveillance addiction. Apple's sales in China went well over the past months. The company's latest quarterly sales in the country climbed almost 30 percent compared with the same period a year ago.
