No.59 The Lake of Stars

Once upon a time little duck and mother duck flew up into the sky. The big red sun was in the sky. Little duck looked down. He saw a pond. In the pond were some frogs. Can we go down and eat the frogs? Said little duck. Mother duck looked down at the pond. No, little duck, she said, I can see a tiger down there. He will eat you up. Little duck looked down. He saw a river. On the river were blue dragonflies. Can we go down and eat the dragonflies? Said little duck. Mother duck looked down at the river. No, little duck, she said, I can see a crocodile down there. He will eat you up. The big red sun went down. The big white moon came up. The stars came out. Little duck looked down. He saw a lake. He could see white flowers on the lake. Can we go down and eat the flowers? Said little duck. Mother duck looked down at the lake. She could not see a tiger. She could not see a crocodile. We can go down now, she said. Down down down they went. They flew down to the lake. They tried and tried to eat the flowers but they could not. Why can't we eat the flowers? Said little duck. Mother duck looked up at the stars. Then she looked down at the flowers. They are not flowers, she said, we can see the stars in the water.
