The School of Athens “The School of Athens” is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was finished between 1509 and 1511 for Pope Julius II. It depicts the great philosophers of the ancient world, who are almost all either Greek or Roman and from the period between 600 B.C. to A.D. 500. The two central figures are Plato and Aristotle. Raphael placed them at the center because they are considered to be two of the most influential figures in western intellectual history.
