Shanghai Daily reports newlyweds are being offered free electronic firecrackers in a bid to encourage them not to set off the real thing to celebrate their nuptials.
Sun Xiaohong, deputy director of the marriage management department at the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau says the offer is subject to couples signing a written pledge.
She says posters reminding brides and grooms that celebrating their marriages with firecrackers is now illegal in many parts of the city have been posted at all registration centers.
