1. accuse – accuse sb of sth, to say that sb has done sth wrong or is guilty of sth.
Example:
The government was accused of incompetence. 政府被指责无能。
2. armament – weapons, especially large guns, bombs, tanks, etc.
Example:
The armament industry 军火工业
3. convict – if someone is convicted of a crime, they are found guilty of that crime in a law court.
Example:
In 1977 he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. 1977年他被判谋杀罪名成立,判处终身监禁。
There was insufficient evidence to convict him. 没有足够证据给他定罪。
4. correspondent - a person who reports news from a particular country or on a particular subject for a newspaper or a television or radio station.
Example:
A foreign / war / sports correspondent 驻外/战地 /体育记者
5. exaggerate – if you exaggerate, you indicate that something is, for example, worse or more important than it really is.
Example:
He tends to exaggerate the difficulties. 他往往夸大困难。

6. disrespectful – someone shows no respect in the way that he/she speak or behaves to someone.
Example:

7. gleaming - shining brightly
Example:
A gleaming red sports car 闪亮的红色跑车
His black hair gleamed in the sun. 他的黑发在阳光下闪着光泽。
8. ignorant – lacking knowledge or information about sth; not educated.
Example:
An ignorant person 无知的人
He’s ignorant about modern technology. 他对现代科技一无所知。
At that time I was ignorant of events going on elsewhere. 那时我并不了解其他地方发生的事情。
9. impose – impose a ban/tax/fine on, to officially order that something should be forbidden, taxed, or someone should be punished.
Example:
We have decided to impose sanctions on countries that break the agreement. 我们决定对违约国加以制裁。
10. inevitable – sth is certain to happen and cannot be prevented or avoided.
Example:
A rise in the interest rates seems inevitable. 提高利率似乎是不可避免的。
It was an inevitable consequence of the decision. 那是这个决定的必然后果。
11. innocent – not guilty of a crime, not having done sth wrong
Example:
They have imprisoned an innocent man. 他们监禁了一名无辜的男子。
12. intercept – if you intercept someone or something that is travelling from one place to another, you stop them before they get to their destination.
Example:
Reporters intercepted him as he tried to leave the hotel. 他正要离开旅馆,记者们把他拦截住了。
13. negligent – failing to give sb/sth enough care or attention, especially when this has serious results.
Example:

14. optimistic – expecting good things to happen or sth to be successful
Example:
She’s not very optimistic about the outcome of the talks. 她对会谈的结果不太乐观。
15. overflow – sth to be so full that the contents go over the sides.
Example:
The river overflowed its bank. 河水涨出了堤岸。
16. penalty – a punishment for breaking a law, rule or contract.
Example:
One of those arrested could face the death penalty. 被捕的那些人中有一人可能被判死刑。

17. plead – to state in court that you are guilty or not guilty of a crime
Example:
He advised his client to plead insanity. 他建议他的当事人以精神不正常作为辩护理由。(say that he/she was mentally ill and therefore not responsible for his/her actions.)
18. polished – a polished performance, piece of writing etc, is done with great skill and style. Polished social behaviors, speech, etc is polite, confident and graceful.
19. punishment – noun, to make sb suffer because they have broken the law or done sth wrong.
Example:
I have no doubt that the man is guilty and that he deserves punishment. 我毫不怀疑此人罪有应得。
20. sewage – waste water and waste substances that are produced by human bodies, that are carried away from houses and factories through special pipes. (sewers)

21. sympathy – the feeling of being sorry for sb; showing that you understand and care about sb’s problems.
Example:

22. a drop in the ocean – an amount of sth that is too small or unimportant to make any real difference to a situation.
23. call for – to ask strongly and publicly for money or justice, etc, in order to change a situation.
Example:
Farmers are calling for more government subsidies. 农民呼吁政府给予更多的补贴。
24. check in - to go to a desk at a hotel or airport and report that you have arrived.
Example:
You need to check in one hour before the flight. 你必须在飞机起飞前一小时办理登机手续。
25. make ends meet – to have just enough money to buy what you need.
Example:
Since Mike lost his job, we can hardly make ends meet. 自从Mike失去了工作,我们简直难以维持生计。
