介绍:
Li Ao was once referred to as one of the three most important political prisoners in Taiwan. He didn’t hold back punches in his sharp criticism of the government. Li was born in Harbin, northeastern China, on April 25, 1935. He moved with his family to Taiwan in 1949, at the end of the Chinese Civil War. Li became known as an advocate for democracy and personal freedom between the 1960s and 1980s. He was jailed by the Kuomintang government twice for helping a pro-Taiwan Independence scholar named Peng Ming-min escape the island in 1970. But Li himself supported the unification of Taiwan with mainland China under the idea of “One Country, Two Systems.” Li wrote articles, essays and books and continued to criticize the Kuomintang government after his release from prison. Ninety-six of his books were banned in Taiwan until 1991. Li ran for public office several times, including for “President” in 2000. In 2005, he took a seat as an independent legislator in Taiwan’s Parliament.
