With huge investments of nearly 100-million yuan, The House That Never Dies, or Jing Cheng 81 Hao has grossed high returns in its box office earnings that exceed 400-million yuan.
This 3D thriller film has also brought its play-writer Manfred Wong, director Waiman Yip and leading actress Ruby Lin to excel in domestic thriller films, which had long been berated as "boring".
However, as Waiman Yip talks about his new film, he is very confident it will lead to even bigger successes.
"To date, Phantom of the Theatre is the work I feel the most satisfied with since I began entering the mainland film market. I am confident about each part ranging from script development, production, to any of the details that demand close cooperation between each department."
The Phantom of the Theatre is set in the 1930's. The plot follows a director Gu Weibang, who is preparing to shoot a thriller romance film. Hot film star Meng Sifan meets director Gu in a theatre in Shanghai and agrees to cooperate in the thriller film.
After Gu Weibang finishes a script "The Phantom Lover ", Meng Sifan has also invited a then popular actor to join the cast. When they get ready to shoot, a series of bizarre incidents occur, culminating in the mysterious death of the leading actor.
Ruby Lin plays Meng Sifan.
"As what the director has said, the film is a perfectly complete story. Since The House That Never Dies that has won applause for both its thriller part and tragic love story, hence we've made more efforts to improve the scenario for the love story in Phantom of the Theatre."
Phantom of the Theatre, which is scheduled to hit big screens on November 27th around China, would open a new phantom series by the trio, who also cooperated in Blood Stained Shoes, or Xiu Hua Xie in Chinese, a domestic horror film box-office hit in 2012.
Waiman Yip admits there's still a gap to catch up with the American and European thriller film productions, but in the mean time the trio would continue their phantom series with the determination to bring thriller fans bigger scares in the future.
