As the world mourns David Bowie's unexpected death, fans from around the world are singing his hit songs to express how the legendary musicians touched their lives through his music.
David Bowie, the innovative and iconic singer whose illustrious career lasted five decades with hits like "Fame," ''Heroes" and "Let's Dance," died on January 10 after a brief battle with cancer.
Following his death, representative Steve Martin said in a statement, that Bowie died "peacefully", surrounded by his family. The singer had battled cancer for 18 months.
The statement goes on to say: "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief". No more details were provided.
His fans worldwide are in shock. Many of them are still gathering to remember the chameleon-like star who transformed the sound and the look of rock with his audacious creativity and his sexually ambiguous make-up.
"He dared to do the unthinkable, like Ziggy Stardust, I mean, you know, totally original concept for any musician to do, he broke the boundaries. He was an inspiration to all of us, I think."
"I didn't sleep all night. I cried last night. The minute I found out. I don't, I just – it was like I lost a family member, you know?"
" I think David Bowie's prolific. There's never been anybody like him. There never will be anybody like him. He was the soundtrack to my youth a lot of his music. There wasn't a mixtape that I didn't make in the 80's that didn't include at least two Bowie tracks so it's a huge loss for our community, the film, the theater, the music community. He was so unbelievable special."
Bowie, who was born David Jones, came of age in the glam rock era of the early 1970s. He had a striking androgynous look in his early days and was known for changing his looks and sounds. The stuttering rock sound of "Changes" gave way to the disco soul of "Young Americans," co-written with John Lennon, to a droning collaboration with Brian Eno in Berlin that produced "Heroes."
He had some of his biggest successes in the early 1980s with the stylist "Let's Dance," and a massive American tour.
Bowie kept a low profile in recent years after reportedly suffering a heart attack in the 2000s.
"It's a struggle to understand how I am no longer 20, I don't know anyone else that this has happened to. Most people they get to 20 and then they stay 20, it didn't happen for me that, I just went on and on and on and suddenly I'm 56. So I have to write from this unique perspective of somebody who never stopped being 20, but I went on. Isn't that weird."
Bowie turned 69 last Friday, the same day he released a new album called "Blackstar."
