介绍:
More than 90 percent of the teenagers treated for Internet addiction at one Beijing clinic "lack fatherly love" in their life. According to Tao Ran, director of the Beijing-based Psychological Clinic for Chinese Youth, compared to liberal arts majors, college students who study topics related to science, technology, and engineering are likely to be more introverted and struggle with social interactions, which in turn means they are more likely to get addicted to the Internet. According to the report, about 90 percent of the over 9,000 teenagers who have been treated at the clinic are boys and their average age is 17. Tao explained that having an absentee father during their teenage years can make these youths become more rebellious and socially awkward, which can lead them to seek solace in a virtual world. Talking points: 1. Absentee father: are they really absent or just won't be there for their kids? How come internet addiction is associated with the absence of a father? 2. How important is parent's role in the treatment of internet addiction? - According to Tao, "Internet addiction reappears in 60 percent of teenagers who finish treatment courses without their parents accompanying them - the resurgence rate is just 20 percent for those who attend the clinic with their parents. 3. Among all his patients who are university students - several of them at some of the country's most prestigious institutions - around 20 percent have been expelled for missing classes as a consequence of their addiction. 4. Do you think rehabilitation camps can help kids get rid of their addictions? -Since the country officially recognized Internet addiction as a mental disorder in 2008, rehabilitation camps designed to treat the problem have opened across China.
