All afternoon alone with the lawn mower
and the willy wagtail who follows the
sweet heheaded grass's offerings;
just me and the little bird and the work
to be done and the neighbours wondering
why would a woman live on her own?
All afternoon knowing the sky will close
its autumn hands over the house tonight
and hold the walls around my single heart
and I will draw the blinds and light the lamp,
lie down on the rug from my old life.
Then he will come. Will stride into the room,
electric with certainty, muscled,
tender with the pain of hearing, just so,
inside his own head, the pitch and rhythm
of all the possible voyages we
might make across all the possible seas.
He slides into me. I hear what he hears.
All night alone with him in the house,
his perfect and constant knowing me.
