The London Eye is a giant（巨大的）Ferris wheel（摩天轮）on the South Bank of the River Thames（泰晤士河）in London. Also known as the Millennium Wheel（千禧之轮）, it has also been called by its owners the British Airways London Eye（英航伦敦眼）, the Merlin Entertainments（默林娱乐集团）London Eye, the EDF ( 经济开发基金会Economic Development Foundation）Energy London Eye and, as of mid-January 2015, the Coca-Cola London Eye.
The structure（建筑）is 443 feet（英尺）tall and the wheel has a diameter（直径）of 394 feet. When erected（直立）in 1999 it was the world's tallest Ferris wheel.
It is Europe's tallest Ferris wheel, and offered the highest public viewing point in London until it was superseded by（被取代）the 804 feet observation deck （观赏台）on the 72nd floor of The Shard（碎片大厦）, which opened to the public on 1 February 2013. It is the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over 3.75 million visitors annually（每年地).
Each of the 10-tonne（公吨） capsules（胶囊，太空舱） represents one of the London Boroughs（自治镇，区）, and holds up to 25 people, who are free to walk around inside the capsule, though seating is provided. The wheel rotates（旋转，循环）at 26 cm per second, so that one revolution（旋转，循环） takes about 30 minutes. It does not usually stop to take on passengers（乘客）; the rotation rate（比率，速度）is slow enough to allow passengers to walk on and off the moving capsules at ground level（地平面）. It is, however, stopped to allow disabled（残疾的）or elderly passengers time to embark（使...上船） and disembark safely.
