Windsor Castle Windsor Castle is a royal（皇家的）residence（住宅，住处） at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire（英国伯克郡县）. It is notable（值得注意的，显著的） for its long association （协会，联盟，联合）with the English and British royal family（皇族，王室） and for its architecture（建筑）. The original（原始的，最初的） castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion of England（英格兰诺曼入侵事件） by William the Conqueror（征服者 威廉；威廉一世家族）.   Originally designed to protect Norman dominance（统治，支配） around the outskirts（郊区） of London and oversee（监督；俯瞰） a strategically （战略性地） important part of the River Thames, Windsor Castle was built as a motte-and-bailey（城墙要塞）, with three wards（守卫）surrounding a central mound（高地，护堤）. Gradually replaced （取代，代替） with stone fortifications（军事防御）, the castle withstood（抵挡） a prolonged（持续很久的） siege（围攻，包围） during the First Barons' War（第一次男爵战争） at the beginning of the 13th century.  Henry III built a luxurious（奢侈的） royal palace（宫殿） within the castle during the middle of the century, 13世纪中，and Edward III went further, rebuilding（重建，改造） the palace to make an even grander（更大的，更宏伟的） set of buildings in what would become "the most expensive secular（世俗的，现世的） building project of the entire（整个）Middle Ages in England".  It is a popular tourist attraction（观光圣地）, a venue（集合地点） for hosting state visits（国事访问）, and the preferred weekend home of Elizabeth II. Today, more than 500 people live and work in Windsor Castle, making it the largest inhabited（有人居住的） castle in the world.
