London Bridge Throughout（贯穿、遍及）history, a number of bridges named London Bridge have spanned（跨越） the River Thames（泰晤士河） between the City of London and Southwark（萨瑟克区， 伦敦自治市）, in central London. The current（现在的，最近的）crossing（十字路口）, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a box girder bridge（箱型梁桥） built from concrete（混凝土）and steel（钢铁）. This replaced（代替） a 19th-century stone-arched（石拱的）bridge, which in turn（反过来；反而；轮流）superseded（作废的，被取代的）a 600-year-old medieval structure（中世纪的结构）. This was preceded（领先）by a succession（连续；继位） of timber（木材，木料）bridges, the first built by the Roman founders of London. Its importance has been the subject of popular culture throughout the ages such as in the nursery rhyme（童瑶，儿歌）]"London Bridge Is Falling Down" and its inclusion（包含，内含物）within art and literature. The modern bridge is owned and maintained（维修，维持）by Bridge House Estates（桥屋苑）, an independent charity（慈善团体） of medieval origin overseen（监视，监察）by the City of London Corporation（伦敦市法团）. It carries the A3 road, which is maintained by the Greater London Authority（伦敦市政府）. The crossing also delineates（描绘，描写）an area along the southern bank of the River Thames, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, that has been designated（指定的，特指的）as a business improvement district（经济开发区）.
