一、 一般过去时的定义
一般过去时表示过去某一时候或某一段时间所发生了的事情或存在的状态。这种动作或者状态可能是一次性，也可能是经常性的发生。常与过去时间yesterday, this morning, just now, a moment ago, in May, last night / year / week, once upon a time, the other day, before …, when – clause, in the past连用
二、 用法说明
1表示在过去某个时间所发生的动作或所处的状态。 常与yesterday, last week, in 1989, just now, a moment ago, the other day，once upon a time等连用。
如：He was here just now. 他刚才还在这里。
What did you do yesterday? 你昨天做了什么事？
I met Lin Tao this morning. 今天上午我会到了林涛。
I was there a moment ago. 刚才我在那儿
2在过去一段时间内的经常性或习惯性动作，经常与often，always等频度副词连用
如：We often played together when we were children. 我们小时候常在一起玩。
注：表示过去经常发生的动作还可用used to 和would。
如果强调已经终止的习惯时要用used to do
He used to drink.他过去喝酒。（意味着他现在不喝酒了。喝酒这个动作终止了）
I used to take a walk in the morning.我过去是在早晨散步。（意味着现在不在早晨散步了）
如：He used to smoke a lot, but he doesn’t now. 他过去经常抽烟，但现在不抽了。
Whenever we were in trouble, he would help us. 每当我们遇到困难，他都会帮助我们。
3表示主语过去的特征或性格。
如：At that time she was very good at English. 那时她英语学得很好。
He worked very hard once upon a time. 他曾经工作非常努力。
4 在条件、时间状语从句中用一般过去时代替一般将来时
如：He said he would wait until they came back.
他说他会一直等到他们回来。
They said they would let me know as soon as they got there.
他们说只要他们一到达那儿就会马上让我知道的。
He said he would not go if it rained.
他说如果下雨他就不去。
5一般过去时有时可以表示现在，多与 want, hope, wonder, think, intend 等动词连用，使语气更委婉。
如：I wondered if you could help me. 不知你能不能帮我一下。
I wondered if you were free this evening. 不知你今晚是否有空。
I thought you might like some flowers. 我想你兴许想要些花。
6 有些句子，虽然没有表示过去确定时间的状语，但实际上是指过去发生的动作或存在的状态的话，也要用过去时，其实就是在宾语从句中，由于时态响应，宾语从句的时态要和主句时态一致的原则的关系，可用一般过去时表示一般现在时，
如：I didn’t know you were here. 没想到你在这里。(were实际上指现在因为在说话时，我已 经知道你在巴黎了。这句话指的是说话之前，所以只能用过去时表示，实际上，这句话暗指：But now I know you are here.）
I thought you were ill. 我以为你病了呢。
这句话应是在说话之前，我以为你病了。但是现在我知道你没病。
I didn’t know you were so busy．我没想到你这么忙。(were实际上指现在)
7用于某些特殊结构中，比如it’s time, I wish, I’d rather, if only, as if, as though 等少数构造后接从句的情形，其中有些结构后面的句子还可用个别从前时表示将来
It’s time we started. 咱们该动身了。
I wish I knew his name. 要是我知道他的名字就好了
I’d rather you lived closer to us. 我渴望你能住得离咱们近点。
If only I were a bird. 要是我是只鸟儿就好了。（表示不可能）
I wish I knew his name. 要是我知道他的名字就好了。
注意：
1. 表示一系列的动作，尽管有先后，都用一般过去时，最后两个动词之间用and连结。如： He opened the door, rushed out and then disappeared. 他打开门，冲了出去，然后就消失了。
2. 注意在语境中理解―我刚才/原来还不……‖。
如：—Your phone number again? I didn’t quite catch it. —It’s 2566666. 请再说一次你的电话号码，好吗？我刚才没听清楚。是2566666。
