In the 1980s the Montreal Protocol replacedchlorofluorocarbons, which were known to harm the ozone layer, with HFCs—butthey have since emerged as a contributor to climate change. Experts estimatethe amendment to the protocol will avoid a half-degree rise in globaltemperatures.
