1823年,克莱门特·克拉克·摩尔受雪橇上铃铛声的启发，写了一首名为《圣尼古拉来访》（后名为《圣诞前夜》）的诗歌。没有想到，这首诗成为时至今日最广为流传的圣诞诗歌，后来世人根据这首诗歌也创作出大量的同名绘本。 克莱门特用生花妙笔第一次把圣诞老人Santa Claus，或诗中的圣尼克或圣尼可拉斯描绘成亲切可爱的形象：面颊像玫瑰、鼻子似樱桃，每逢圣诞节前夜便会驾着驯鹿雪橇来到村镇里，从民居的烟囟里爬下，把礼物塞进孩子们挂在床头的长袜子里。这首诗一经发表便广受欢迎，快乐的圣诞老人形象从此深入人心。

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; 他眨了眨眼，转过头，立马儿我知道压根儿就不用害怕;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, "HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!"
