When east and west meet at a Mountain Resort --Series One: Brand New Start in Chengde Anchor: China is a historically and culturally rich country with warm-hearted and enterprising people. These qualities have attracted numerous people to come to work and study here in recent years. The number of foreign students arriving in China is on the rise and even more are considering coming in the future. Chengde Medical University is one of the destinations for these students. For more details, let’s follow our reporter Luo Yu on his visit to the school’s campus in Hebei. Report: Chengde, lying in the northeast of north China’s Hebei Province, was once the summer resort capital of the Qing Dynasty. Diverse ethnic groups of different cultures have lived together around this wondrous city from ancient times. Even now you still might be surprised to see exotic faces and be surrounded by amazing cultures form other lands in the city. There are more than two hundred students from 8 countries who are furthering their studies in Chengde Medical University, where their dream is to be a medical professional. Today we are going to find out more about their new life in Chengde. (Muhammad Bilal Tasiq, 00:18, male, English) My name is Muhammad Bilal Tasiq, and I am from Pakistan. I like to be a surgeon in the future. (Faduma Hassan, 2:16, female, English) ‘My name is Faduma Hassan, and I’m form Minnesota from the States. I decided on medical school because I want to become a doctor, pediatrics.’ (Mwansa Musonda Bwalya, 32:00, male, English) ‘I’m Mwansa Musonda Bwalya. I am Zambian. I love my university very much and I would like to be a lecturer here at this university.’ (NamukoloMaliwa, 3:04, female, English) ‘Hello, my name is Namukolo, I’m form Zambia, Lusaka. I’m here for medical studies. I’d like to be a surgeon. Specifically, either a neurosurgeon or a cardiologist.’ (Suldan Danny Yusuf, 32:00, male, English) My name is Suldan Danny Yusuf from the New York city, America. Aside from being a surgeon too anywhere in the world, I’d like to come back here after studying here and teach the students English.’ Zhang Shufeng is the president of the university. (Zhang Shufeng, 7:03, male, Chinese) ‘The goal for the overseas students’ education is to nurture them to be medical talents. They will serve their own people and meanwhile, dedicate to the well-being of humankind. Data shows the pass rate of their Medical Licensing Examination in their home countries reaches 90%.’ Many of them have been attracted to the Chinese language and culture since childhood. The undergraduate program in the university combines 5-year medical courses and 1 year Chinese course for them to better adapt to the Chinese society. Mwansa is a freshman, currently taking Chinese courses. He could hardly cover up his excitement when learning Chinese. (Mwansa Musonda Bwalya,2:10, male, English) ‘Back home, I actually live with my mom. She is a lecturer in the hospital. I would meet Chinese people, I couldn’t get a thing when they spoke, but I had some curiosity about their language. The language is really special and I really wanted to learn.’ Suldan came to Chengde just a month ago. ‘It’s been an exciting month. I came to China because ever since I was young, I was attracted to Chinese traditions, calligraphy. Everything about them seemed beautiful. Even during my undergraduate years I used to study Chinese history, so I came for that reason and also I’m trying to be doctor. The past month has been really really nice.’ Chengde is a popular destination for tourists coming from afar, yet it’s definitely not an ideal place for night life lovers. It is about 230 kilometers away from the capital city of Beijing and takes you four hours by train. Those who have already seen all that Beijing has to offer, choose to dedicate their time to studies instead. Overseas students would not only plow through their books to learn as much as possible, but treasure every moment in the picturesque campus. They have to study hard to learn Chinese, of course, and doing so in a remote place like Chengde will help them progress faster. (Faduma Hassan, female, English) ‘That’s one slight drawback in Chengde, because it’s such a small suburb. Not everybody here in the city speaks English. But it’s great. Because then you are forced to practice your Chinese and then you have to actually use it.’ (2:53 Mwansa, male, English) ‘Looking at the environment and location of this university, it’s far from the city. Not that it’s about it’s far from the city, but you are away from all noise and are able to focus with your studies. And the location is around mountains, the scenery and view that you get when you wake up, the feeling that you have when you walk around in the university, you tend to focus on life and imagine a bigger future for yourself.’ Freshmen are all eager to learn medical sciences subjects after finishing up with their Chinese course. It seems that anatomy is what Elijah is looking forward to. (Elijah, 13:24, male, English) ‘The science subjects are something I am really looking forward to. That’s to learn that to be able to dissect people and to be able to learn more about the sciences and to be able to get our degrees in the end. So my expectations are high and I can’t wait.’ How do you feel about being a freshman in university? Excited, anxious, maybe a little bit homesick? I’m sure that these teenagers have entered into what is sure to be the best time of their lives in a university in China. As happy as they seem, they have to stay positive and focused far away from big cities and there are loads of challenges ahead of them. Life is hard, but they try even harder, simply bec
