Officials send condolences to dead officer vowing to fight against terrorism A ceremony has been held to pay respects to a Chinese guard killed in a terrorist attack in Somalia. Zhang Nan was sent to Somalia in 2014 to be a security officer in the Chinese embassy in Mogadishu. China's Armed Police Force has posthumously conferred a badge of "loyal guard" on him. Zhang served in a detachment in Linyi City, east China's Shandong, before his deployment to Somalia. He served with the force for 11 years. Zhang's remains were returned to Jinan on Saturday evening, with two guards who were wounded in the bombing escorting his coffin. Militant group Al-Shabaab launched the suicide attack on the Jazeera Palace Hotel on July 26, killing more than a dozen people. The luxury hotel in the Somali capital houses embassies from China, Egypt, Kenya and Qatar. Chinese armed police to help Nepal highway repair Chinese armed transport police entered Nepal from Tibet on Saturday to help repair the rain-ravaged China-Nepal Highway. Around one hundred officers and more than 30 excavators entered Nepal through Zham Pass in Tibet. Rainstorms triggered mudslides in several sections and blocked traffic in recent days. General Fu Ling of the traffic rescue brigade said Nepal has entered flood season and the rain will continue for the next 20 days. China plans expanded serious illness insurance The Chinese government has announced it is considering expanding the country's serious illness insurance plan to cover more of the population. The State Council says the insurance should benefit all urban and rural residents covered by the nation's basic health insurance, and the changes should be made by the end of this year. Serious illness insurance in China has so far been used only on a trial basis. The plan reimburses patients for medical expenses that exceed the basic coverage, intending to prevent people from being dragged into poverty because of medical costs. Research center to reinvent Shanxi's coal industry The government of Shanxi province in north China and Tsinghua Univeristy have agreed to establish a research center that will work to reinvent the province's struggling coal industry. Once the backbone of the local economy, coal mines and processors lost more than 4 billion yuan in the first half of this year as government curbs polluting industries. The research center will focus on clean coal and other low-carbon sources of energy. Shanxi's government has put limits on coal production as it tries to diversify the province's economy. Also, no new coal mines will be approved over the next five years in order to tackle overcapacity in the sector. Malaysia seeks assistance from Reunion Island's surrounding territories Malaysia's Transport Minister says his country is seeking assistance from several aviation authorities in territories near Reunion island in the Indian Ocean, to assist investigators should more airline debris be discovered. A part found on a beach last week has been confirmed as coming from a Boeing 777, the same model as missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The part has been sent to the French city of Toulouse to be analyzed and to confirm whether it came from the plane that disappeared without a trace on March 8th of last year. 39 killed as torrential rains pound E. Indian state At least 39 people have been killed over the past few days as torrential rains have flooded vast areas of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. The heavy rains since Friday night have affected over 1.8 million people. West Bengal's chief minister cut short her visit to Britain to return home and toured the affected districts on Saturday. She confirmed 39 rain-related deaths in the state, while vowing to support the flood-affected people. Pakistan releases over 160 Indian fishermen: officials Pakistan has released over 160 Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture amid tensions with India over cross-border fire exchanges in recent weeks. Prime Ministers of the two countries agreed last month in a meeting in Ufa, Russia, that they will release all fishermen in two weeks. However the release was delayed for some days due to escalations along the border. The Indian fishermen are likely to be handed over at the border on Monday. Groups working for the welfare of the detainees say the fishermen mistakenly entered Pakistan's waters as the two nuclear rivals have not yet reached an agreement on maritime boundaries. Two Turkish security forces killed, 24 wounded in PKK attack A suicide bombing has killed two security force members and wounded 24 others in Turkey's eastern province of Agri. Local authorities have released a statement, blaming the Kurdistan Workers Party for the attack. The statement says the attack was carried out using a tractor loaded with two tonnes of explosives, and targeted an outpost. Tensions between the PKK and Turkish troops have been mounting following an Islamic State suicide bombing which killed 32 and injured 104 activists in the town of Suruc.
