Shui-Zai-Wo-Shang-Pu-De-Xiong-Di "睡在我上铺的兄弟"or Brother Who Sleeps in My Upper Berth is a nostalgic version with both music and words of the song created by Gao Xiaosong in the 1990s.
After its release, the song quickly developed popularity with China's representative folksong singers like Lao Lang and Huang Lei contributing their respective versions of the campus ballad.
Gao Xiaosong explains the inspiration behind his plan to adapt a story that the classic song depicts for the big screen.
"I've been living on this campus for more than 30 years. As soon as I arrive at the lawn for the graduations each summer, I find a big group of college boys there singing that song loudly... Brother Who Sleeps in My Upper Berth. Music has a long-lived vitality, which I think is due to the quality of being inclined to lead to acute nostalgia and a longing for our days at university."
The question of who would play the main roles in Gao's new film aroused considerable media attention then. Chinese television and film actor Chen Xiao's presence at a press conference gives an answer.
Gao explains why Chen Xiao has been chosen.
"I have the confidence moviegoers may want to watch a film sincerely reminiscent of the good old campus days. I chose Chen Xiao not only because of his handsomeness, but more importantly, for Chen also seems to have a dominating influence on others nearby."
Chen Xiao became more widely known for his second male lead role as "Lin Ping Zhi" in 2013's TV drama series "Swordman" or Xiao-Ao-Jiang-Hu in Chinese.("笑傲江湖")
Young Chinese actress Yu Xintian is the lead actress of the film. Gao's new film is set to be released in January next year.
In addition, the Chinese Internet entertainment giant Letv will assist in an adaptation of this classic song into an online drama series, which would be debut on "letv.com".
