Mainland welcomes Taiwan joining AIIB with proper identity A Chinese mainland spokesperson says that the mainland welcomes Taiwan joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank under an appropriate name. Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office, has confirmed via a media report that Taiwan can join the bank despite failing to become a founding member. He says the mainland will consider opinions from all sides so as to properly address the issue of Taiwan's membership in the bank. Taiwan authorities announced the island's letter of intent for membership of the bank on the last day of March, the deadline for such applications to join the bank as a founding member. China Limits Shenzhen Visitors to Hong Kong to Curb Day Trippers The central government has agreed to limit visitors to Hong Kong. Central authorities are making the move to limit the number of mainland residents making day trips into the city. The Ministry of Public Security is limiting people from Shenzhen to one trip per week. This comes amid a growing number of complaints in Hong Kong about the influx of mainland residents visiting the city. China Q1 foreign trade dips 6 pct New stats show foreign trade has declined by some 6-percent year on year in the first quarter. Foreign trade through the first 3-months topped out at just over 900-billion U.S. dollars. Exports are up by nearly 5-percent. However, imports are down by over 17-percent. On a monthly basis, Chinese exports in March dropped by over 14.5-percent. Imports through March are down over 12-percent. China's former state-assets manager stands trial over corruption Jiang Jiemin, the former head of China's State-owned Assets watchdog, is in court today, facing corruption charges. He is being tried at a local court in Hubei. Prosecutors allege Jiang Jiemin took massive amounts of bribes while working with the China National Petroleum Corporation and PetroChina Company Limited. Jiang was placed under investigation and removed from public office in September 2013. Hillary Clinton announces bid for 2016 Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has officially announced her second bid for presidency. She launched her campaign website on Sunday, telling Americans she wanted to be their "champion". She entered the race in 2016 in a bid to become the first woman US president. Her first campaign ad is targeting the middle class and the economy. Polling suggests Hillary Clinton stands as the overwhelming favorite to replace Barack Obama. She is set to begin her campaigning in Iowa. BU.S. marines arrive for 6 month deployment to Australia More than one thousand U.S. marines have begun arriving in the northern Australian city of Darwin for a six month rotation to train with Australian troops. They are the fourth rotation of U.S. marines to arrive in Darwin after Australia and the U.S. struck a deal in 2011 to raise the number of U.S. troops based in Australia. The goal is to have 2,500 marines serving in Australia at Darwin by 2017. The increase of US military presence in Australia is seen as part of the US military's broader long-term "pivot" to the Asia-Pacific region. Two attacks hit foreign embassies in Tripoli Two coordinated attacks have hit the South Korean and Moroccan embassies in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The attack on the South Korean embassy on Sunday killed two local security guards while no South Korean casualties were reported. South Korea's foreign ministry has strongly condemned the deadly attack and expressed condolences to the victims and their families. Just hours after the attack, a bomb hit the Moroccan embassy, damaging the gate and a residential building next to the embassy. Nobody was hurt by the blast. Militants claiming loyalty to the Islamic State say they were behind both of the attacks. Sudanese voters begin casting votes in presidential, legislative polls Voters in Sudan are casting their ballots to elect a president and members for the national and state parliaments amid boycotting by most of the opposition parties. 16 candidates, including incumbent President Omar al-Bashir, are running for the country's top post. Forty-five political parties, most of them small ones, are taking part in the race. The polling process is to last until Wednesday while the vote counting is set to begin the next day. The final results of the elections are scheduled to be announced on April 27. Rio residents join nationwide protest against Dilma Rousseff Nationwide demonstrations are underway in Brazil against the government of President Dilma Rousseff. It is the second round of mass protests against Rousseff in less than a month. Police estimate nearly 10-thousand people have joined in a march in Rio. Rouseff's administration is involved in a scandal involving kickbacks involving oil giant Petrobras. Rousseff herself is not under investigation. Paris council votes to bid for 2024 Olympics Paris has moved a step closer to bidding for the 2024 Olympics after the city council adopted a resolution in favor of hosting the games. The resolution approved Monday stipulates that the city will join the national Olympic committee, the state and the region in an association aimed at finalizing the bid project. It says the bid should be led by athletes. Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924 and mounted three unsuccessful bids during the past two decades. So far, Boston, Rome and Hamburg have declared their bids for the Games.
