1. Well, I was offered that by President Ford, but I just had a feeling…I didn't know that much about China, but I had the feeling China was the future.
2. I mean, a huge country. I know it was enclosed but I just felt that things would change. That'd be wonderful to get to know as best I could.
3. I couldn't get to do it very well, cuz I was kept... pretty confined when was the Chief of the Liaison Office. But... I was right. I bet on the future. I bet that China was gonna emerge, strong.
4. I never predict it to be as powerful and as significant a member in the international community
as it is. But I think I was right. I know for me, personally, it was the right thing to do.

一个疆域辽阔的国家。我知道中国当时很封闭,但我觉得事物会发生变化,如果我能尽可能去了解它的话,那将太好了。
但是我没办法做到,因为当时我是联络处的领导,很受限制。但是..我是正确的。我对未来进行打赌,我打赌中国定会崛起,变得强大起来。
我没有预料到中国会成为国际社会一个至关重要的成员。但我觉得我是对的。对我个人来说,做这件事是正确的。
