A thin twist of smoke rises from the chimney of the cottage. The pork barbecue smell fills the air as Frosty and I walk to the little house. Outside its entrance, a smelly homeless person is begging for cash. Covered in mosquito bites, he looks as though he hasn’t bathed in a long time and smells like hell.
It is a small shabby pub with its entire room teemed with voiced and movement. Local citizens, foreigners, and even guys who just got out of jail coming here to enjoy their newly recovered freedoms…I hear many different accents.
Working as an employee himself, the bistro owner greets us with a hello like an old friend although it is apparent in his tone that teenagers should not come to such a social gathering place that is mainly for men.
“Should we stay？” Frosty asks me.
“Looks like we don’t have a choice,” I reply to her, seeing our cute dog walk straight to a room corner opposite the front door. Then he lies down on the floor under an empty table.
“Your hungry dog needs a treat, ” the owner says and smiles at us, picking up a food tray from a table.
Frosty and I sit down. We order two bowls of onion soup and some pepper-spiced bacon to share with Woof. We have been walking the whole morning, feeling a bit drained.
Then Frosty pokes my arm, twisting her face to direct my attention to the table next to ours. I glance quickly over my shoulder and note two men chattering in muted vices but loud enough for us to hear them.
