On his deceased wife
Methought I saw my late espoused saint
Brought to me like Alcestis，from the grave，
Whom Jove's great son to her glad husband4 gave，
Rescued from death by force， though pale and faint。
Mine，as whom wash'd from spot of child-bed taint
Purification in the old Law did save，
And such， as yet once more I trust to have
Full sight of her in Heaven without restraint，
Came vested all in white， pure as her mind：
Her face was veil'd; yet to my fancied sight
Love， sweetness， goodness， in her person shin'd
So clear， as in no face with more delight。
But O， as to embrace me she inclin'd，
I wak'd；she fled; and day brought back my night。

我仿佛看见我最近死去的爱妻，
被送回人间，像赫克里斯当初
从死亡手里抢救的亚尔塞斯蒂，
苍白无力，又还给她的丈夫。
她好像古时洗身礼拯救的妇女，
已洗涤干净原来产褥的血污；
她穿着她心地那样纯净的白衣，
正如我相信我会无拘无束
有一天在天堂里面遇见她那样。
她虽然蒙着面纱，我好像看见
她全身透出亲热，淑善，和温纯，
比任何人脸上显露的都叫人喜欢。
但她正俯身要和我拥抱时，我醒了，
人空了，白天带来了黑夜漫漫。
