1. A long long time ago in China, there was a big scary nasty beast named Nian, whose name means year. He had razor-sharp teeth, giant claws and really mean growl.
2. Most of the time he lived in the wilderness, but in the darkest night of the year when the new moon was in the sky, he would sneak into the village and scare everyone in sight, even the animals.
3. People dreaded the new moon for many many years until a wiseman taught them the three things Nian was afraid of - loud noises, fire and the color red.
4. The next time Nian came, the villagers fought back. They hit their drums as loud as they could, lit every firecracker they had and wore the color red from head to toe. Nian ran far away and never came back.
5. After that the people started celebrating the new moon instead of fearing it. That celebration became a 15-day festival of family, food and good fortune called Chinese New Year.
很久很久以前，在中国有一只叫做“Nian”的巨大恐怖凶狠的野兽，他的名字意味着“年”。他有着极其锋利的牙齿，巨大的爪子和凶恶的咆哮声。
大多时候他住在荒野之地。但是在一年中最黑暗的夜晚，新月当空之时，他就会偷偷潜入到村庄里，吓唬他所看到的每个人，甚至是动物。
许久以来，人们一直对新月感到恐惧，直到一位智者告诉他们 Nian 害怕的三件东西——巨大的响声，火和红色。
Nian 再一次到来后，村人们进行了回击。他们把鼓尽可能敲到最响。点燃所有爆竹，并且从头到脚穿上红色衣物。Nian 远远地跑走了，再也没有回来。
之后，人们不再害怕新月，反而开始庆祝它。这一庆祝变成了一段为期15天的关于家人、食物和好运的节日，被称作中国新年。
