At least 3 people have died and 29 others have been injured after vehicles piled up on a section of highway in Jiangsu.
The accident happened on Saturday on the Changzhou section of the highway linking Shanghai and Nanjing.
Dozens of trucks, buses and cars crashed into each other.
All of the injured people were sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
An investigation is underway.
Railway stations, expressways, and airports across China saw a travel peak on Saturday, the first day of the 3-day Qingming Festival holiday.
Official statistics show that the number of passengers nationwide reached nearly 12 million on Saturday, up 13 percent year on year.
Over 500 trains were added to help ease the travel pressure.
Road traffic also saw a peak, with volume on China's ten major expressways up 14 percent from the same period last year.
In addition, major airports in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou coped with a sharp increase in passengers.
Overseas travelers helped to swell passenger numbers, with Thailand and the United States among the most popular destinations.

A Chinese firm has developed the country's first 300-megawatt nuclear reactor cooling pump.
The developer, Harbin Electric Corporation, says the cooling pump has passed state appraisals of the China Machinery Industry Federation.
The cooling pump has been tested for 200 hours of continuous operation under automated high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
Previously, China depended on imports for key components of pressurized water reactor nuclear power plants.
The country aims to raise its installed nuclear power capacity to 58 GW with an additional 30 GW under construction by 2020.
Australian authorities have confirmed that another piece of debris, found in Mauritius, will be examined in connection to the disappearance of MH370.
