The Chinese cities are expanding quickly with the rapid economic growth. And some of the buildings are Not or so Poorly designed that in only a decade they become "old", and not usable. Huang Wenjing, co-founder of OPEN Architecture, says the proper prototypes are very much needed when the country needs enormous amount of new buildings while there lacks qualified architects. Huang Wenjing and Li Hu co-founded OPEN Architecture in New York City in 2003. After graduation in the U.S. they worked in different architecture studios and companies for some years. In The year 2005 they decided to come back to China, and established its Beijing office in 2006. In the last ten years the studio finished quite a few projects, some of which became award winning ones including Gehua Youth and Cultural Center, Beijing No.4 High School Fangshan Campus, Staff&`&s Dormitory of Fuzhou NetDragon Company, and others. Huang says architects can and should design for a better and more convenient urban life. When she and Li Hu find the people are used to the gated communities, they propose to tear down the walls and make them into public space. In an interview with Voices From Other Lands, Huang Wenjing shared the stories that she and her husband decided to come back and design for an urban China.
