The microbes in your body outnumber your own cells by ten to one. For the most part, they are either beneficial ones or unobtrusive freeloaders. They help us digest our food and absorb nutrients. They manufacture vital vitamins and proteins that our own genes cannot produce, and they train our immune systemsto combat infectious intruders. Resident bacteria on our skin secrete a sort of natural moisturizer, preventing cracks that could allow pathogens to penetrate. However, the overdose of antibiotics can sometimes disturb the checking system of microbes and make helpful microbes get caught in the line of fire between antibiotic and its intended target. If this happens, people may suffer from unexpected diseases. Medical workers view microbes as killers to be hunted down and eradicated. Now, doctors also see micro-biome as an ecosystem. “How to coax the system back into a healthy state is the best way to cure.” —— end ——
