In a potato field, A Dutch farmer sits in the cabin of a harvester, monitoring two drones—a driverless tractor roaming the fields and a quadcopter in the air—that provide detailed readings on soil chemistry, water content, nutrients and growth, measuring the progress of every plant (down to the individual potato). This is a picture of “precision farming”.
The average yield of potatoes per acre in Holland is twice that of global average. In green houses, they eliminate 90 percent of the irrigation water for key crops, and they use almost no chemical pesticides on plants.
Netherlands is a small, densely populated country. Yet it is the globe’s number two exporters of food as measured by value, second only to the U.S.A.,which has 270 times its landmass.
The secret? There is a wonderful combination of science and market. Universities and Research centers sit in the middle of a big cluster of agricultural technology start-ups and experimental farms. They believe smart human interference can lead to a new sustainability and feed the world.
