When the superior man hears the Dao, He practices diligently; When the mediocre man hears the Dao, He seems to be aware of it and yet unaware of it; When the inferior man hears the Dao, He laughs loudly at it. If he did not laugh, It would not be the Dao. Therefore as the ancient saying goes: The bright Dao seems dark; Progress with the Dao seems like retreat; The smooth Dao seems rough; Highest virtue seems like a valley; Sheer white seems tarnished; Broad virtue seems insufficient; Established virtue seems infirm; Pure essence seems contaminated; A great square has no corners; A great vessel needs not to be completed; A great note is inaudible; A great form has no shape. The Dao is hidden and nameless. Yet it is only the Dao That nourishes and brings fulfillment.
