Topic2: Father drives daughter from Nanjing to American college (by LNJ) A Chinese father has fulfilled his promise and driven his daughter all the way from China to the United States where she is to attend college. Huang Haitao and his daughter Huang Xinyi set out from their home in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province on June 1. The epic journey lasted 108 days, taking them over 30,000 kilometers across 26 countries before finally culminating in Seattle. Their journey included countries such as Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Switzerland. Father and daughter declined Seattle University's invitation to a ceremony arranged for them. Huang explained that he just wanted his daughter to settle down and begin her school life. Talking points: 1. How did the idea of driving all the way to the U.S. come about? - Huang made the decision four years ago, promising his daughter the journey would happen once she was accepted by a university in the United States. Huang wanted his daughter to become familiar with the world via first-hand experiences, rather than just through words on a page. It was also Huang's way to say goodbye to his daughter as she set off on her new life. 2. The route: the pair drove through all those countries - from China to the UK - before crossing the Atlantic by air and resuming their road trip in North America 3. They declined the univesity's offer of throwing them a welcoming party. What do you make of their decision? - Huang said his daughter "came to the university to study," , "It was just a great life experience for both of us." 4. The father and daughter's endeavor might inspire and encourage some followers. But can anybody do that? - Road trips like this are not new for the family. They had previously driven across China, Eurasia, and to the North Pole. - Huang said he started preparing documents for the trip at the beginning of 2017. He also made contact with Chinese nationals and consulates in countries they would visit in advance in case of emergency. - According to Huang, they got all their documents and plans in order just two days before they left. - The logistics, however, proved difficult. Much of the driving was done through Russia, which took more than 20 days alone. - During the trip, they received help and suggestions from fellow Chinese nationals and became popular among them.
