1. Many large round-shaped buildings are found in the mountain villages of Fujian province in southeastern China. These apartment-like complexes are known as Tulou. They are generally three to five stories high, built with wood and have thick mud walls.
2. People living in the Tulou are from the same clan with the same family name. Some large Tulou can house up to 50 families. It's believed that over 30,000 Tulou of various sizes still exist in different parts of China. The first Tulou were built in Fujian in the 13th century.
3. Most Tulou were built by the Hakka people who migrated from the Yellow River Basin in northern China. Inside the Tulou with its walls as symbols of resistance, the family’s own ties are also expected to last for many generations yet.
