奥登是公认的现代诗坛名家，也是著名的同性恋者。他46岁时开始和18岁的诗人Chester Kallman相恋，1973年奥登在维也纳死于心脏病，两年后Kallman死于雅典。
奥登为Chester Kallman写了很多爱情诗，《葬礼蓝调》是其中一首。奥登的性取向丝毫不妨碍他成为大诗人，而且这也不是他成为大诗人的标志。读者不会因为这个原因而更看得起他或更看不起他，也不会用这种东西来理解他的诗歌。他喜欢一个人和我们爱一个异性是一样的，在诗歌中对爱的表达和其他诗人也是一样的。
休·格兰特主演的《四个婚礼和一个葬礼》中借一个同性恋之口，朗诵了这首诗，是全剧中最严肃、最沉痛的部分，与其他轻松、幽默、浪漫的片段之间到达了精致的平衡。
