“笑气”（laughing gas），学名为一氧化二氮（nitrous oxide），
在室温下是无色、无味的不可燃气体（colorless odorless non-flammable gas）。
温度升高后，可成为很强的氧化剂（powerful oxidizer）。
“笑气”作为一种麻醉性的化学物质曾广泛应用于医学手术。
因为吸入后人会产生愉悦的感觉（euphoric effects），故得名“笑气”。
“笑气”进入血液后会导致人体缺氧，长期吸食可能引起高血压（high blood pressure）、晕厥（syncope），甚至心脏病发作（heart attack）。长期接触此类气体还可引起贫血（anemia）及中枢神经系统损害（central nervous system injury）等。如果超量摄入，可能因为缺氧导致窒息死亡（die of suffocation）。
目前，笑气尚未列入我国麻醉药品品种目录（catalogue of narcotic drugs）、精神药品品种目录（catalogue of psychotropic（作用于精神的） drugs）。

A Chinese woman who had been studying in the US has been returned to China in a wheelchair after becoming addicted to nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas."
据《中国青年报》周一报道，林娜（化名）曾在西雅图学习，现在北京某医院接受治疗，目前仍不能下地行走。报道中没有提到她的年龄。
Lin Na (pseudonym[ˈsu:dənɪm]化名), who had been studying in Seattle, is now being treated in a Beijing hospital and still cannot walk, the Beijing Youth Daily reported on Monday. The report did not mention Lin's age.
林娜表示，自己沉迷于“笑气”已经半年多，身体技能严重受损，出现失禁、不能行走的症状……林娜的这篇名为《最终我坐着轮椅被推出了首都国际机场》的文章，在网络引发超过10万次点击。
Lin says she has been addicted to laughing gas for over half a year. Her habit has damaged her body, leaving her incontinent and unable to walk, according to an article she wrote which recently went viral on Chinese social media, receiving over 100,000 views as of press time.
《中国青年报》报道称，今年年初林娜曾试图戒掉“笑气”，但在3月份复吸且更加上瘾。
Lin tried to kick her addiction at the start of the year, but resumed inhaling the gas in March and her addiction became worse than ever, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.
据称，一箱“笑气”售价180美元（约合人民币1200元），在她住所附近的烟草店有售。林娜曾一度每月花费10万元吸食。吸食前需将气体打入气球。（“嗨气球”dizzy balloons）
Lin said that a box of laughing gas canisters cost $180 in a tobacco store near her apartment and she used to spend over 100,000 yuan ($14,735) every month on the gas, which is usually placed into balloons prior to inhalation吸入剂[ˌɪnhə'leɪʃn].
