Oscars 2016 TV Ratings Are Lowest in Years The 88th Academy Awards have hit an eight-year low in TV ratings with 34.3 million viewers. The highest number of viewers for the evening came as the host, Chris Rock, delivered a blistering monologue starting at 8:35 p.m. The show drew 37.6 million people watching from 8 to 9 p.m. before it lost nearly 9 million viewers as it dragged on toward 11 p.m. The 2016 audience was the second-lowest on record for Oscars ceremonies. However, ABC said the telecast was still the most-watched TV awards show of the year. "When I had found out - I think two weeks into filming - that the original actor that they were going to cast for whatever reasons couldn't do it and my friend said, 'Mike, what about your friend James?' I was like so thankful because no one else in Hollywood could, in my mind - excuse me - no one else in my life could've been more suited for the role of Hap than James." Based on the novels of Joe Lansdale, the show is set in East Texas in the 1980's and follows two old friends both dealing with disappointment with their lives. The six-episode dark comedy will premiere on the Sundance channel on Wednesday night at 10 p.m.
